It sounds like pure common sense...because it IS pure common sense. Take 5 makes it real by identifying for the crewman what could go wrong and how these 5 steps can help avoid the accident. The audience sees how hazards like leaking oil, an unsecured ladder, or an electric shock can all be avoided by engaging the brain before the hands.

The 5 components of Take 5 are:
- Stop, Step Back and Observe. Before jumping into a job, take a moment to look at the bigger picture.
- Walk Through the Task. Pre-plan the task and examine what needs to be done.
- Identify Hazards. Try to identify what can go wrong, before it is too late.
- Control and Communicate. Make sure everyone you are working with is on the same page.
- Safely Complete the Task. After completing the first 4, you are now ready to finish the job at hand.
