The guidebook is brought to life by two cartoon characters who depict the rights and wrongs of safe working practices in a humorous way. The characters are also used in the P&I Club accident prevention poster campaign, reflecting the Club's ability to use humor as an international language to convey the serious message of loss prevention.
All safety recommendations and advice given are intended to be both simple and inexpensive to implement. 'The emphasis throughout is on practicality', says author Richard Bracken, formerly a training officer with Shell. Bracken wrote the guidebook shortly after joining the North of England team in 1994. A Second Edition of the guide was published in 2003 bringing the text up-to-date taking into account recent industry developments - particularly the worldwide implementation of the ISM Code.
